WOOD OPTIONS:
- Ash: The 1" thick Ash is a light colored, smooth-grained hardwood that grows throughout North America. With its typical straight grain and beige-to-light-brown hue, ash wood is a very attractive option for a modern home. It is also one of the most durable varieties of lumber. It's lightweight and shock-resistant characteristics have made it a favorite for baseball bats, tool handles, and restaurant furniture. The Emerald Ash Borer (Agrilus Planipennis or EAB) is an insect responsible for the destruction of tens of millions of ash trees throughout North America. We work with companies throughout the Pacific North West to ethically source Ash to ensure these trees do not go to waste.
- Black Walnut: The 1" thick Black Walnut is dark, hard, dense and tight-grained. It's prized for its strength, grain and color. It polishes to a very smooth finish, and the color ranges from creamy white in the sapwood to a dark chocolate in the heartwood. It’s the only dark wood native to North America, making it one of the most unique and valuable species in North America. We ethically source solid black walnut throughout the Pacific North West.
-
Reclaimed Pine: The 1.5" thick old-growth pine is salvaged from demolition homes throughout the Midwest. The wood is full of cool characteristics, such as nail holes, plaster lines, and color variations. We cannot guarantee that the shelving you receive will look identical to the one in the product shot. Although, all surface imperfections are natural and tell a story that spans over a hundred years, making each piece unique and truly one of a kind. The raw and natural character of the reclaimed Pine is perfect for rustic or modern farmhouse styled homes. We offer two different options for finishing reclaimed pine: Natural and Surfaced Plane. Please see our reclaimed pine presentation for more information on finish options and origins
- Natural Finish: We simply sand and finish. This produces a darker overall color and texture with a slightly uneven surface.
- Surface planed: We skim off the top and bottom layer with a surface planer, making a more even surface and lighter color variation.
BRACKETS:
We hand fabricate our shelf brackets with locally sourced, American made 1.5" solid steel channel. This not only supports American manufacturing, it creates a better product. Unlike foreign steel, American steel is graded on a system to ensure high strength, consistency and low environmental impact.
After fabrication, the brackets are professionally powder coated to achieve the desired color. Powder coating is applied as dry powder through an electrostatic process, then cured with heat. It is well known for providing a high-quality, durable finish, that is aesthetically pleasing and much more environmentally friendly than it’s traditional paint counterpart.
Powder Coat finish options
- Clearcoat on steel
- Black
- Gold/bronze*
*GOLD/BRONZE Brackets have an ADDITIONAL FEE because the gold/bronze powder coating requires more coats of finish to achieve the proper results.
ASSEMBLY: Due to the size of the unit, it will ship disassembled. However, we will send very detailed, step-by-step instructions when the unit ships. Installation Manual.
WEIGHT CAPACITY: The solid steel shelf bracket mounts to the wall several locations, hidden behind each shelf. (For example, a 4 shelf bracket will mount to the wall in 4 locations) This displaces the weight evenly throughout the bracket, making for an extremely sturdy design that is easy to install. We recommend placing a bracket every 16"-32" of shelf distance. The number of brackets you use for your project will depend on the overall length of the shelves and the amount of weight you'd like them to bear (more brackets = higher weight capacity) For heavy duty shelving, such as a fully loaded bookshelf, we recommend placing brackets 24" apart or less. When spaced ≤ 24", the brackets can support 50lb per linear foot of shelving.*
If you need help figuring out how many brackets are necessary for your project, please contact us and we will make a recommendation with a custom rendering for you.
*How the brackets are mounted to the wall directly impacts the load capacity. Different wall constructions require different kinds of mounting anchors. For this reason, we DO NOT include wall mounting anchors. We provide a detailed outline of our recommended wall anchors for the different constructions within the installation manual.
The shelves attached to the brackets in 2 locations on each shelf rung. We DO provide 3/4" wood screws to attach the wood shelves to the brackets. Please message us if you would like to see the installation manual prior to ordering or if you have any other questions. We have installed this shelving hundreds of times on just about every kind of construction and would be happy to answer any questions you may have.
